In this publication, we will stick to a calligraphy practice pad or stacks of paper rather than full-size sheets of thin paper. They are all bound and available for purchase in our store. Here are all the best calligraphy paper pads we have available.
Here’s a quick rating:
• JNB Practice Pad.
• Canson Pro-Layout marker pad.
• Boris Layout Pad
• JNB Copperplate / Engrossers Pad
• Rhodia Pad (acid-free, neutral pH)

JNB Practice Pad — Our exercise pads have recently been updated to absorb more ink well. Most of the ink has them without spreading or smudging. This is a smooth 8.5 x 11 inch or 11 x 17-inch paper and can have multiple sheets. Our practice pad is pretty smooth so you won’t get caught up in it, and clear enough to use with directions.
The practical JNB pad is the best paper for calligraphy for both sharp-pointed pens and for use with wide pens. With its low price point and 24-pound bond, it can be used for everyday practice. Don’t worry about mistakes!

The P32 Canson Pro-Layout Marker Pad is made from the best paper for calligraphy, the Pro-Layout pad is one of the best. Very smooth and suitable paper for both pointed pen and wide-edged calligraphy. This Canson pad does not bleed or spread with most inks and is transparent enough to use with instructions.
Canson Pro-Layout is a higher quality paper for use in personal practice, reproductions, or calligraphy lessons.

P09-100 Boris Layout Pad — The Boris Layout Pad is often called the best papers for calligraphy and used in beginner classes because it is responsive and not too expensive to work with. Boris Layout Pad is our most popular notepad, it absorbs ink well, doesn’t bleed or spill like some lined calligraphy paper.
The Boris Layout notepad from Borden & Riley is available in a variety of sizes. Choose from 50-sheet or 100-sheet notepads made from excellent paper. It is translucent and easy to use with calligraphy guidelines. For tracing, we recommend using cotton pads instead.

The P01 JNB Copperplate/Engrossers Pad is our own calligraphy pad with a sharp nib. It is a grid with blue calligraphy grid paper and slanted lines. Like our JNB Practice Pad, the Copperplate Pad has been updated to absorb the ink better with less smudging or spreading. We tested with Higgins Eternal, Noodler’s ink, Richton, and McCaffery’s.

The P74 Rhodia Pad is acid-free, neutral pH calligraphy-lined paper. It is the best paper for calligraphy if you use sharp-pointed pen classes because it is smooth and inexpensive. It is also available in the dot calligraphy practice grid. Other sizes are also available on our website.

To create watercolor drawings, professional watercolor paper made of 100% cotton with a density of 300 g/m2 is best suited. If the texture is needed, choose cold-embossed paper. If the choice is made correctly, it will never lead away from the water. My personal choice is a paper with the Torchon effect made by Canson and Lana. But I do not recommend the Arches watercolor paper. It has a gelatin coating that allows you to perform a large number of fills but does not react in any way with mascara. Therefore, you can use it only for watercolors.

Choosing the best paper for calligraphy can go a long way toward preventing headaches when trying to practice. On a bad piece of paper, your favorite ink can run out and everything you write will be sloppy. Practicing doesn’t have to be an expensive endeavor. In fact, as this list shows, there is plenty of great calligraphy paper in any price range.

Buy the best and share your findings in the comments, ask questions about the paper.
